The record
Formed in 1905 when Colorado River water breached an irrigation canal and flooded the basin for eighteen months. Marketed as a resort in the 1950s. Rising salinity and agricultural runoff collapsed the ecosystem; the receding shoreline exposes toxic dust.

It reads as a shape in the treeline until you are almost inside it. Salton Sea does not announce itself. What registers first is scale — the structure is larger inside than the approach prepares you for, and colder.
Water has found its own routes through the structure and made them permanent. The known history covers perhaps two thirds of what you are standing in. Beyond that the record thins into municipal paperwork and hearsay, and then into nothing at all.
Nobody who works nearby will name it. They give directions around it instead. At danger level 3 of 5, the honest advice is that the place deserves more caution than curiosity usually allows.

Written by people who actually went. Where these contradict the oracle, believe these.
Went in at first light with two others. The main hall is more intact than the photos suggest — the collapse everyone posts about is confined to the east wing. Floor is sound if you stay on the joists. We were out in ninety minutes and saw nobody.
Permit came through in about two weeks. Guide was excellent and let us set up properly rather than herding us. Worth doing it the legitimate way — you get access to the lower level, which the fence-hoppers never see.

The 1963 date is off by a year in most sources. The municipal record says otherwise, I can dig out the reference.
Went last month. Add 'no parking within 2km' to the terrain notes.
