The record
Founded in 1908 after a rail worker found a diamond in the sand. At its height it had a ballroom, a hospital with the first X-ray machine in the southern hemisphere, and an ice factory. Abandoned by 1956; the Namib has been reclaiming it since.

The 1963 date is off by a year in most sources. The municipal record says otherwise, I can dig out the reference.
