Permit came through in about two weeks. Guide was excellent and let us set up properly rather than herding us. Worth doing it the legitimate way — you get access to the lower level, which the fence-hoppers never see.

An anthracite mine fire ignited beneath the borough in 1962 and continues to burn. Most residents relocated after 1984; the ZIP code was revoked in 2002. A handful of holdouts remain. Ground subsidence and carbon monoxide venting are ongoing.

Written by people who actually went. Where these contradict the oracle, believe these.
Went alone, which was stupid, and I'd say so even though nothing happened. No signal past the entrance, and the layout does not match any plan I could find beforehand. Bring someone. Bring a second light.
A note on the approach rather than the site: the obvious track is not the right one. Locals were friendly and pointed us at the longer route, which is longer for a reason. Take the long one.
